DARE2DATEShort film
Berlin
2019-2020"Dare2Date" is an exploration of the dating landscape during the COVID-19 pandemic, captured through the use of machinima and digital ethnography techniques. The film features video interviews with young men in Berlin, recruited from dating apps, and disguised with Snapchat filters to ensure privacy. These participants share their candid thoughts and experiences in settings designed to mimic real dates, creating an authentic atmosphere despite the virtual medium.
The machinima method is employed as a screencast film, recording video chats directly from the screen. This technique provides an unfiltered look at the participants' interactions, enhancing the film's authenticity and real-life feel.
Drawing on the principles of digital ethnography as articulated by Sarah Pink, the film delves into the participants' personal experiences and the evolving dynamics of dating during the pandemic. By capturing genuine conversations and emotional expressions, "Dare2Date" reveals how young men navigate the challenges of seeking connection in a time of social distancing. The documentary highlights their strategies, frustrations, and hopes, offering a rich and detailed portrayal of the pursuit of intimacy in in these challenging times.
